Moles are subterranean animals related to shrews. They tunnel below the surface feeding on works and other soil invertebrates.
Moles are solitary for most of the year, coming together for copulation in the spring. The females tend to their young for approximately five weeks before they and their offspring return to a solitary life.
Moles are widespread throughout the UK
Damage is done by the moles extruding the soil dug out of the tunnels into the “mole hills”. In agriculture the soil from the mole hills can lead to dangerous fermentation in silage.
Moles can be trapped or gassed. Successful mole control is dependent on the location of the deep tunnel. Great care must be taken when placing mole traps such as the barrel/Duffus trap or scissor trap as moles have an acute sense of smell.
